Java warning message in SAM

On running ‘Disk Devices’ tools under ‘Disks and File Systems’ option of System Administration Manager (SAM) in our UNIX Server (HP 9000 running HPUX B.11.11 U) a warning message appeared. The message that appeared reads as follows

“The Logical Volume Manager shows this device file, /dev/dsk/c5t0d5, with hardware path, 0/4/0/0.1.3.0.0.0.5, as belonging to volume Group, vgvedas. SAM has determined that this hardware path is not currently active because either the device is disconnected, or this is not the Primary path to a multiple path physical volume. This results in incorrect disk utilization information in the disk devices and volume group list.”

Can anyone help to identify why this error message appeared and how to solve the problem?

Symptoms:
PHCO_31314:
JAGaf49179) SAM displays the following message while
retrieving the disk list:
----------------------------------------------
The Logical Volume Manager shows this device
file, /dev/dsk/Disk_0, with hardware path, , as
belonging to Volume Group, rootdg. SAM has
determined that this hardware path is not
currently active because either the device is
disconnected, or this is not the primary path
to a multiple path physical volume. This
results in incorrect disk utilization
information in the Disk Devices and Volume
Group lists.
----------------------------------------------
The message is displayed in the following
scenario:
On a system that uses VxVM, enter "SAM -> Disks
and File Systems -> Disk Devices" subarea. VxVM
volumes are created with attached disk devices.
The VxVM disks are initialized using enclosure-
based names.
Defect Description:
PHCO_31314:
JAGaf49179) Since the VxVM disks are initialized with
enclosure-based names, they are of the format
Disk_0 instead of cxtxdx. SAM tries to
validate a device file with the name Disk_0
and is not able to trace the device file.
Resolution: The enclosure-based names are mapped to a
device file name before running the check
for validating a device file. Now, the Disk
Devices subarea displays the correct message
with VxVM enclosure-based names.

Thank you RTM for your reply.

On our analysis we found that SAM showed the message due to the specified hardware path (disk space) was not utilized for any volume group. In other words this hardware path is in unused space block. Resulting SAM displaying the message.

LVM thinks that /dev/dsk/c5t0d5 belongs to vgvedas however /dev/dsk/c5t0d5 cannot be accessed. That is a very different thing than /dev/dsk/c5t0d5 being unused. This is a problem and you need to fix it. At some point in the past the disk must have existed and been a part of vgvedas. If you have some lv's that are using it, you have a pretty big problem. Even if no lv's are using it, this situation will prevent you from being able to backup the configuration.
