UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

thanks for your help, i didnt realise you could download the operating system from sun.com

Ive just had a new hard drive installed 20 GIG for unix and x windows. How can i connect this hard drive for unix and x windows only? and are there any helpful tutorials for starters??

I'm not sure what you mean by "unix and x windows".... I'm not sure if you're talking about a dual boot machine, or some version of linux running a GUI, in which case I'm not sure why you would seperate the two...

And what are you asking when you ask how to "connect" the drive...

Sorry, I just read your previous post. If you bought a completely seperate drive just for whatever brand of *nix you get, just connect it physically the same way you would any other drive.

As far as setup, install the intended OS on your second drive and setup the boot manager provided (ie. LILO, LOADLIN, GRUB, etc) to dual boot your system... I'm guessing you have some brand of Windows installed on your primary drive.

Im studying at Shellield Hallam University. I start Unix and X windows in October. I want to know whether to partition my 30 GIG hard Drive and have unix operating system working on 10 GIG of that or to have it on a completley different hard drive but on the same tower.

In regards to putting it on a hard drive, How do i install it onto the 10 GIG part of my hard drive, and are there any tutorials on how it's done.

Im not too hot on programming, ive only programmed in C++ and will be programming in unix when i start at Uni.

OK, well my suggestion is to go ahead and partition the 30 GB drive... 10 should be more than enough for unix, especially if you're basically just playing around with it.

Depending on the version/distribution of Unix or Linux that you end up obtaining, installation should be fairly simple. Most have the type of hand-holding that you've come to expect with Windows now.

Just boot from the cdrom and install to the new partition, probably hda1 or hda2... depending on any other partitions you may have.

Check into the site I gave you before. That should have a tutorial on it.
