Dude, 1 in octal and 1 in decimal are the same number. Try:
echo $((010 - 1))
you will either get 7 or 9.

Not sure what this means.

But I see what you meant about same in decimal as it is in octal.

echo $((010 - 1))
will work in ksh or bash. But not in csh ot tcsh or sh.
