No $ when typing cw

Hi

As a dummy my question is very simple. When typing cw I've read (many times) that a '$' should appear at the end of the word I'm about to change. However, it doesn't, and in my case the word is instantly deleted and so ready to be changed!

Can somebody tell me why this is, or maybe I have to enable something to make that appear (I imagine not). For anybodies information I'm working on a Macbook Terminal.

Thanks in advance.

In standard vi(m) builds that is true, your build does a delete and insert, is that presenting a problem in use?

No, not at all. It was more of a question to see if that's normal. When you follow books as a beginner you're often not sure if what's happening 'should' or 'shouldn't' be happening. Hence this excellent forum.

I'm working from an old book of John Muster and several commands seem to not function as mentioned - ex : using z. to refresh the screen or z n. to display x lines doesn't work either. I expect that due to the using xterm (or is it bash) certain commands function differently. But I'll get the hang of it eventually..... LOL!

If you on a Linux platform, you are actually using vim, not vi. There are many subtle differences between vim and vi.

Hi fpmurphy.

Thanks for the info. I guess as 'skrnesaver' says, 'is that presenting a problem ..' the answer being 'no'. It's just useful to know what will happen when you type in 'x' command, so as one can expect a 'y' result.

As for vi or vim, I'm afraid to say I'm new to working in UNIX, however, if it's of some use I can tell you that I'm working on a macbook. The two bits of information that show themselves clearly when typing in the 'env' command - if that answers the question - is that it's xterm and a bash (C shell?) ... if that makes any sense?

Maybe you can point me in the direction of vi or vim, if it's of any importance.

Thanks.
