question on RJ-45 cable

Hi,

Quick question on RJ-45 cable. I ran ethernet cable, this cable is about 200 feet long. I only need 100 feet cable, does the extra length going to hurt in terms of speed or signal? Please advise.

Thanks.

Any kind of cat5 ethernet ought to work up to at least 100 meters, which is definitely over 200 feet. Don't think there will be a problem.

Corona688 is correct in principle but Cat-5 cable is only good for 100 Mbits/sec over 100 metres. Cat-6 cable is good for 1000 Mbits/sec over 100 metres.

RJ-45 is the name of the type of connector each end of the cable. If this is Cat-6 cable they will be 8P8C connectors. We need to know the line speed and cable Category to advise properly.

You have 200 ft of cable to cover 100 ft of distance. In principle there is no problem providing that you do not coil the excess. Also, avoid tight bends and lay out the whole cable in a wide curve, or a large rectangle, or an even snake shape. Avoid sources of interference along the cable route.

Support and tie the cable (particularly near the sockets). Cat-5 cable is heavy and Cat-6 cable is even more heavy.

Personally I would cut the cable to size and terminate with proper sockets rather than use a long flylead.

Agree with methyl about socketing the cable ends and using patch cables to connect to the devices.

The RJ45 for solid wire (you do know there is a difference ?) is, in my experience, more likely to fail than the combination of a punched down cable and a matching key jack.
