can i get UNIX kernel and compile it like Linux ?

I am not a newbie to Linux, i have been using Linux as my desktop for 4 years, but i am just an end user to Linux, no advanced knowledge to it.

I knew that, i can download generic linux kernel and compile it by myself, but how about Unix? how can i get an Unix kernel and compile it ? or no this thing?

You can only get the code for and recompile open source implementations of Unix (Linux *-BSD, etc...) closed source implementations (Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, etc...) do not release their source code.

Most of the Solaris OS source code is available from the OpenSolaris website.

thanks for every replies, mean if i want to install UNIX from source, then i need to get the UNIX source code and compile it ? for example, i can down the freeBSD source code and compile it. But i want the kernel only, not other application package.

Not exactly trivial but here are the instructions to compile illumos (an OpenSolaris fork) from source.
