Suffixing a file with the timestamp

How do i suffix a file with a timestamp...also can i just have it in mmddyy format?

Use the shell to manipulate strings.

filename=file.txt

echo mv $filename ${filename%.txt}_$(date +%m%d%y).${filename/*./}

# 6

mv is actually changing the original file to the one suffixed with the timestamp...

I need the timestamp suffixed file moved to a different path and the original file should be as it is.

That's not what 'move' means. You want a copy? Use cp instead of mv.

You can tack whatever path you want in front of the destination filename to alter where it ends up.
