Hi there,

I have 350 files in this directory: /home/adams/29 that was mistakenly renamed in this format:

TTFILE_BIT_638478.txt.dat

I want to take out the trailing .dat so that it ends in .txt: TTFILE_BIT_638478.txt

I need help please.

But I have one part I don't understand:
j=`basename $i .dat` -- is the basename suppose to be the name of the file?

And do I input each file name for basename?
Like, j=`TTFILE_BIT_2342.txt.dat $i .dat`
j=`TTFILE_BIT_3246.txt.dat $i .dat` ... and so on?

Or rather the code just loop through the whole 300 files and rename anyfile with .txt.dat to .txt

basename is unix command, dont replace it. The command loops through all the files and does the needful.

If you are little doubtful about this, just create a temporary directory, create some dummy files as I did, and run the for loop and confirm.

I have a similar renaming question, so I figured I would post here rather than starting a new thread.

I have a bunch a files named 20110117 Trial 1_Sandri Hanover.jpg, 20110117 Trial 2_For Ed.jpg.....etc

I need it to replace the underscore with a dash followed by a blank space.
For example
20110117 Trial 1- Sandri Hanover.jpg, 20110117 Trial 2- For Ed.jpg.....etc
