I have still a problem. When i tried to overwrite the file

Code:
sed '1,20s/^\([^ ]*\)\(.*\)/\1 \1\@it.teithe.gr\2/p' telx2 > telx2

the file after it doesn't contain anything. Can you explain me why?

Because you can't do that with sed, unless you have a version which supports -i. then you can do
Code:
sed -i '1,20s/^\([^ ]*\)\(.*\)/\1 \1\@it.teithe.gr\2/p' telx2

'cause you cannot overwrite the input file with the redirection like that.

try:
Code:
/bin/echo '1,20s/^\([^ ]*\)\(.*\)/\1 \1\@it.teithe.gr\2/\nwq!' | ex -s telx2

Thanks again but I still have problems.
I want to change all the lines that the number begins with 694 to 727. For example

from
SGIWEB SGIWEB@it.teithe.gr 6945-415263
to
SGIWEB SGIWEB@it.teithe.gr 7275-415263

I tried this based on your previous answers but I didn't manage it.
Code:
sed 's/^\([^ ]*\)\([^ ]*\)\(694\)\(.-[0-9]\{6\}\)/\1 \2 \727\4/p' newfile2 > leeds

sed -n '1,20s/^\([^ ][^ ]*\)[ ]*694\(.*\)$/\1 \1@it.teithe.gr 727\2/p' newfile2 > leeds

Unfortunately you cannot expect full-blown solutions anywhere.
Given your sample input the posted 'sed' does what you described under SUN/Solaris.

Do you wnt to modify the ORIGINAL solution to the ORIGINAL file
OR
Do you want another sed to post-process the output of the ORIGINAL sed?
Code:
echo 'SGIWEB SGIWEB@it.teithe.gr 6945-415263' | sed -n 's/^\([^ ][^ ]*[ ]*[^ ][^ ]*[ ]*\)694\(.*\)/\1727\2/p'

Do you understand the posted sed?
Can you apply/modified the posted sed to your particular data sample?
