Unix : hardware to learn

As many people, i learned Windows & Linux on x86 hardware.

But i'd like to learn on my own, Unix.

Unlike Linux, it seems impossible to take any hardware and install, on the fly, any Unix OS.

So, i'd like to know : how could someone learn by himself Unix ?

Share your experiences, please... Unless, learning on company is necessary ?

If possible, could someone tell me which hardware (any advice / deal would be appreciated) has to be bought (expensive / cheap) for this goal ?

I'd like to study/learn AIX / HP-UX / Solaris.

Thank you very much.

You can install Solaris on x86 hardware/virtual machine.

Indeed, i saw that Solaris is available on x86 / SPARC. AIX / HP-UX ?

AIX is Power only. HP-UX Itanium only.

Thank you very much.

I suppose i have to try to find some second hand / ebay hardware for it.

I thought XServe could be used for AIX Smilie.

Thank you.

One of the BSDs, NetBSD, runs on almost everything: NetBSD Documentation .

You might be able to find hardware on eBay. I recall buying a Sun SPARC workstation there for a few hundred $US.

If you simply wanted to practice using without installing, you can pay for access to AIX, HP-UX, etc., boxes at Polarhome - gateway to freedom ... cheers, drl
