My next task is to try and put this into a for loop so that it will perform the operation on every txt file in that directory. Hopefully I will be able to manage that one myself

I'm having trouble with the additional of the for loop.

I have 3 texts files in the current directory: a.txt, b.txt, c.txt

I execute the script:

$ CHANGE_TEST_NUMS

Here's my code:

 OUTPUT_FILENAME=`echo $TXT_FILE | sed 's/.txt/_mod.txt/'`

 /usr/xpg4/bin/awk -v start=6 -v end=8 '!($1 >= start && $1 <= end){
 if($1 ~ /[0-9]{1,}/ && $1>end)
  sub(/[0-9]{1,}/,($1-(end-start)-1))
 print
 }' $1 > $OUTPUT_FILENAME

done

It echos the name of the first txt file which is a.txt.
It creates the txt file a_mod.txt
However this new file is blank and the script hangs up.
