hi,
i used the foll method to compare

read startdt

$a = `echo ls -l | cut 44-52` (this returns jus a single line cause i am reading line by line)

if $a-ge$startdt then
echo "hello"
fi

but even if $ is no greater than $startdate all resuts are shown
for eg $a is 20050520 and startdate is 20050603
even now $a is greater than startdate condition succeds

what am i doin wrong?
how can solve this?

regards

Please copy and paste code *directly* from your scripts, as looking at your code above, there are several syntax errors that would prevent the script from running at all...

e.g.
Code:
$a = `echo ls -l | cut 44-52`

There are FOUR things wrong with this one statement alone.

1. $a - do not preceed assignments with $
2. no spaces around the = allowed in assignments!
3. echo ls -l is just going to echo ls -l!
4. cut 44-52 (cut what? fields, chars, bytes, ???)

If this *really* was your script, it'd fall over straight away....

Cheers

Hi

sorry bob :-) i was actually workin on a different unix pc and i am typing mails from a windows pc.......so lots of typos.....

this is my code......

read startdt
ls -l --time-style="'%Y%m%d' | while read LINE
do
a='echo "$LINE"|cut -c 44-52'
if test $a -ge $startdt
then
echo "hello"
fi
done

in the above code even if "a" is less than "startdt".hello gets echoed......what am i doin wrong?

Thanks and Regards
