functionally the same sed but shorter without back-references sed 's/\.[^.]*$/_failed&/' Smilie

Try this one,

Code:
#! /bin/csh
if($# != 1) then
echo "Usage: $0 filename"
exit
endif
set base=$1
set newbase=`echo ${base}|sed 's/\./_fails./'`
cp ${base} ${newbase}

Remind you that, earlier code works in bash only since thats bash built in substitution.
