Screen Sharing VNC Mac

Hello,
I am having some trouble using screen sharing with my Mac. There is a Mac Pro in the lab at my school, and I need to access it via screen sharing from my Macbook Pro from home. Each has Lion. The screen sharing works when I am in the lab and the Mac Pro is on the WiFi network, it also works using vnc when the Mac Pro is not connected to WiFi. The method I am using is go to "Go" in the Finder menu and then "Connect to server." Then I simply type vnc://(ip address or hostname). After doing this, it attempts to connect to the server and then pops up with

"Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly."

I should point out that I made sure that Screen Sharing is enabled (as I said, it works when I am there) and also that the ssh remote connection through the terminal works. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem could be?
Thanks
Tyler

Hmm.. It seems that the VNC software only connects computers that are on the same network. Is there some sort of application that works around this? I really need to work from my home.

It looks to me more a question of filtering (routers - firewall...).
You should see with your work network admins...
