The shell may actually create them all at the same time, effectively, i.e. all processes are created by the time ps[ and grep are exec-ed.

While this thread is open, I have a lingering question. This code actually runs in one my scripts in a never ending loop to check whether the script is still running. To compensate for the extra grep command in the output, I actually made the code such that it checked for 2 lines in the output of the aforesaid combination of commands, i.e.

Code:
if [ `ps -ef | grep 'abc.sh'` -le 1 ]; then
 echo "Script ends"
fi

I'd never reccomend this code. -le is for integers, not strings, and certainly not for lines.

I know that this way to monitor script's running status is probably not the best way to do it. But still, why would the output be inconsistent?
I'm not even sure how it ever worked in the first place.

I showed how to use a pid file in this thread, which is a much better way of tracking things than ps | grep.

Code:
if [ `ps -ef | grep -c 'abc.sh'` -le 1 ]; then
 echo "Script ends"
fi

missed out the -c argument above. My question is not about the correctness or the appropriateness of code. The code has been changed already. It just brought forth a question that I posted here about the triggering of processes.

Perhaps ps didn't finish running due to a low memory condition or the like, or the process table changed while it was running. I wouldn't want to depend on the full process listing all the time, again, PID files and such are where it's at.
