Question Swap Partition Space

first of all, sorry about my english...I´m a spanish newbie to this marvelous OS and i have just a couple of doubts...u know? :-)
1) how big should my swap partition be if i installed debian 2.2r3 or FreeBSD 4.x on a AMD k7 1400Mhz with 512Mb of Random Access Memory?

i heard that those OS (debian Gnu/Linux and FreeBSD) are used to work well on oldest machines (my other computer, a pentiumII 233Mhz with 64Mb RAM, for example)...that´s why i have a little doubt now...will FreeBSD work well with my new computer (the AMD k7 1400mhz...the same info of the paragraph above), i mean...there will be any kind of problems (compatibility, conflicts...) because of the new hardware?

thx a lot by advnaced

swap should generally be 2X the amount of physical RAM, so 1 GB in your case. I don't know about BSD, but Solaris will not hardly swap at all unless it has 2X, even when it needs to for better performance. I would check the hardware compability list, but I would guess that BSD would run great on the hardware you describe.
