AWK help
Hi,
I have a file with the following data in a file :: File1

Code:
Name Credit
A       45
B       4
D       9
A       -3
B       -10
A       -3

Need the output as

Code:
Name  +ve Cr    -ve Cr
A        45            -6
B        4              -10
D        9               0

Got a command that adds up all the records but without segregating +ve and -ve values.

Code:
awk -F"," '{a[$2]+=$1}END{for (i in a) print i,a[i]}' file1

Please assist.

You need to use some conditional statements. I would do all this in just 1 line of code because it would look messy.

Awesome. My actual file was "," delimited. I added a -F",". Thanks a lot again.

I want to find a particular char in a file and want for add a new value next to it, by inserting a newline..

please help..

Now to your problem -- I'm not sure I understand what you mean. It is always helpful to see what you want to get also -- your desired output. If you want to insert a line before every string '6218', then you could use this:

sed '/6218/ i My line goes here' file

hi, thanks for the help but it is not working.
It is giving the error message "sed: command garbled:"
