See the table of string operations at the Advanced Bash Scripting Guide.

A single % there means "Strip shortest match of $substring from back of $string". So /* would mean find the last / in the string, and strip off it and everything after it (since globs like * are accepted there).

Generally, executables in UNIX are not kept in the same path as their data at all. Better to have a separate location for it which you don't have to use weird tricks to find.

$0 is whatever path the script happened to be run by, whether it be absolute, relative, or a bare word looked up in PATH. You can't depend on it containing the path you want.

CUR_DIR=${0%/*}
if [ "$CUR_DIR" != "$0" ]
then
cd $CUR_DIR

To repeat:

$0 is whatever name the script happened to be run by -- it could be an absolute path, could be a relative path, or might have no path at all! You can't depend on it containing the path you want.

Generally, executables in UNIX are not kept in the same place as their data. Files are organized by function. Better to have a separate location which you know, instead of trying to infer one somehow.
