create a macro in vi file

In vi, how do I create a macro?

For example, I want to create a macro to join lines and insert ^

Please assist. Thanks!

have a look here: Vi Cheat Sheet

Search for "key mapping"

P.S. To join lines use a capital "J", no need for a macro.
