See "Disposition-Notification-To Header" in RFC 2298 - Message format for message disposition - this give you a quick look at the fact that it can be done.

See "X-Confirm-Reading-To" Tracking E-mail - note that it states most email programs ingnore it.

The only thing I can't seem to find is where you would add this confirmation request - I thought sendmail didn't have this option and found on a qmail archive the following:

qmail doesn't support this natively. There may be patches floating
around to support it, but I haven't used them; Google should be able
to turn them up if they exist.
Yet I could not find on Sendmail's site anything about it.

Of course, maybe I should have read the man page for 'mail' first! Check yours and look for option of /delivery or delivery notification - may be what you are looking for.

TCP/IP, how to verify delivery?

When I successfully write data to a TCP/IP socket, as I understand it, I am only guaranteed the data gets to the TCP/IP stack's buffer.
