where to obtain UNIX and learning on a UNIX variant?

Hi.
I've just started to get into UNIX.

Researched on the Net, found out that most of the UNIX variants are not offered online.

1. Any of you guys know where I could obtain them on the Net? or anywhere at all?

2. Does learning a UNIX variant enough to cover an understanding of other UNIX variants also since the variants are quite similar mechanism wise?

i'm using PC with Windows XP Professional Edition by the way. A standalone PC with a broadband connection.

Then you didn't look much. There are many UNIX variants freely available on the 'net.

Sure, you won't find AIX or HP-UX free online, but there are many others.

1. Please make sure to read the FAQS before posting. See this FAQ for more info on obtaining UNIX.

2. I think it's enough to cover a basic understanding, but there can be big differences between UNIX distributions.

Hi !
Do you need any special kind of UNIX ? Or any unix ? You can find a lot of free unix-like operating systems... Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD and lot of others... I used Linux for a while, but now I'm using FreeBSD. In my opinion is the best UNIX for beginners and for advanced users also... and you can find a lot of documentation on it too

If you want to download it go to http://www.freebsd.org/ and you'll see there a few links...
If you would like Linux, I'll recomand you http://www.linuxiso.org/ where you'll see a list of linux distros and the link to the CD images...
Anyway, there are more other unix-like operating systems, all you have to do is to search for them.
About understanding unix... you can start with any unix you like... it doesn't matter... the basics are the same everywhere

. It will matter only later, after you'll have some experience.

Also you can download Solaris for x86 from www.sun.com

32 bit FreeBSD

If you are on a 32 bit system FreeBSD is the way to go, linux can be inconsistant and daunting if you really want to learn.
