Question To convert the numeric month into alphabetic
hi ,

This function actually gives me the last month but as a numeric value what should i do to get it as suppose :Jul

date '+%b %Y' |
{
read MONTH YEAR
MONTH=`expr "$MONTH" - 1`
echo $MONTH
}

CASE statement
You can add a CASE statement that translates the numerical month back into the short name:

case ${MONTH_NUM} in
1) MONTH="Jan";;
2) MONTH="Feb";;
etc

esac

Or use GNU date (part of sh-utils):

date +%b --date="1 month ago"
