Sed working on lines of small length and not large length

Hi ,
I have a peculiar case, where my sed command is working on a file which contains lines of small length.

sed "s/XYZ:1/XYZ:3/g" abc.txt > xyz.txt

when abc.txt contains lines of small length(currently around 80 chars) , this sed command is working fine.
when abc.txt contains lines of large length (currently around 1000chars.. can be of any number of characters), sed command is not working, it is creating xyz.txt file of zero bytes...

Can u give some suggestion on this..

Hi,
If I concatenate a space at the end of the file, then sed is working

cat "" >> abc.txt
If I do like this.. then it is working for any length.... but the no.of bytes the file is showing, is increasing by one.
sed "s/XYZ:1/XYZ:3/g" abc.txt > xyz.txt

Like some other utilities, sed only works on files with complete lines, i.e: where each line is terminated by a linefeed. If your input file does not contain any linefeeds, then sed does nothing.

Hi Ygor,
U r correct, currently in the file, I have only one line and there is no linefeed character, how to proceed in this case... What can we do in this to work, without adding line feed character. Is it possible to add line feed character, run sed and then delete the line feed character..... Any ideas please.
