When you logon to a system, the system loads your env. by loading default profile, then .profile or equivalent found in your $HOME... at a point it will test by what means you are coneecting yourself and perhaps set new values (teminal, stty stuff...). Since you entered your username and passwd, you are in interaction with the system -> interactive mode.

When you login, you get an interactive shell.

Another ambiguous question.

Do you mean
Login Shell and Interactive Shell
Or:
login (the process) and Interactive Shell (the program)
Or what?

It is quite normal to lock users into a menu after login such that they do not get an Interactive Shell.
