There's no reason to use ^ as a regex will match the first occurrence anyway - given that . means any character.

Perhaps your vi has something weird set in .exrc?

if i understand you right, :%s/......./& /g suppose to only find first match for each line, it will not find everything that matches it?

No. g matches every occurrence (i.e. it's global). Omit it to match only the first occurrence.
