how to get the last dir from a pathname using IFS
I have a question, and don't know my way around with it. Smilie

If I have a pathname

say. i have the following pathname:

/users/classA/tests

how can I get only 'tests' out of that path.

I know we have to use IFS=/ ... but next, i am clueless Smilie
I also know that I can use shift to move through the arguments
but can't figure it out. In java, I would put a counter...
Very new to unix here.

any help is welcome!

Note that those are backticks, not single quotes.

Upon re-reading your post, I'm wondering why you have the restriction of using IFS. Sounds like a homework problem. If it is, please read our rules.

What with the static requirement to use IFS, together with the fact that this thread originated from .edu, we can safely deduce that this is homework.
