Question Unix for an old box

Hi everbody,

I have an old 386 66mhz pc. With 8mbs of ram and 540mb hard drive. Can some recommend a distribution of unix that I can load on the machine to practice with?

Minix, Slackware Linux, Redhat Linux.

Any of those should work. It might make your life easier if you can hook the hard drive up to a more modern computer with a CD-ROM to do the actual install.

In 1994, Slackware could be installed from floppies*. I have no idea if this is still true -- you may need to hunt down an older distribution.

* I know, because I did it. It took me all night to download the disk-sets over a 14.4 dialup connection.

Opps, I forgot to mention it does have a cd-rom.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to check them out. Should I try to get older distributions for any of the 3 you mention, or is it just a matter of what packages I try to install?

Thank you,

I would attempt to find an older distribution. Then again, even some of the latest versions can be thinned down to a couple hundred megabytes depending on what you need to do. But you should probably also keep in mind that the latest versions are geared slightly more towards faster computers.

So yes, I think finding an older distro would be your best bet.
