Thanks all..
I came up with the below code after many a trail-and-error. A lil' success.!

Code:
#more ft | tr ' ' '\012' | grep root | wc -l

It worked! But I am not able to make the box search exclusively for only 'root'.

@Methyl, my piece of code is very much similar to yours. How come I never found this similar codes in any threads on this subject?? I only found perl scripts Smilie

When you eventually posted the actual question I adapted and undersimplified a previous solution to counting every word in a file.

Btw. Have you re-read the title of this thread?

I have started this thread.. to get a pattern which counts the number of times a particular word repeats in a file. What is with it now? Smilie
