Hi We have a redhat 4 with 8GB ram in it
but free -m only recognises 3 GB of total ram
please could some one help me why this happens

Does this motherboard actually support >4GB RAM?
# 3
Old 03-01-2012
Sometimes 32 bit operating systems cannot recognize memory greater than 4 GB .
It depends on the kernel configuration. Out of the box, the 32-bit version of Linux can see about 3.3 GB of RAM.

I wouldn't expect that to be true for decades now... Certainly a 32-bit kernel can support more than 4GB of RAM, even if individual processes running in a 32-bit system can't, unless Linux was compiled in a very limited memory mode.

On the other hand, many 32-bit boards don't support greater than 4 gigs of RAM.

for 32 bit OS architectures , technically a process can access 2^32 of memory space .
Means 4 gigs .But with PAE feature of the kernel allows a process to use more memory .

Physical Address Extension (PAE) is a feature to allow (32-bit) x86 processors to access a physical address space (including random access memory and memory mapped devices) larger than 4 gigabytes.

yes, why is it like this

thank you for your help

Now that you've explained what your system is, a Proliant ProLiant DL360 G5 should actually be able to support 8GB RAM, yes. Most consumer machines from that era would not...

32-bit x86 Linux kernels have different memory models available, configured at compile-time. If you're building your own kernel, inside the 'make menuconfig' menu look for 'high memory support' under 'processor type and features'. select 'off' for most efficient memory use on systems with <=1GB RAM, '4GB' for systems with <=4GB RAM, and 64GB for anything larger.

If you can, look for a precompiled kernel provided by your distribution with 64GB memory support enabled.
