You'd do 's/home/george/' to mean 'replace the first match of 'george' with 'home' on every line before printing it out. Putting a 2 before it would mean do that only for the second line.

ah!i think i've seen this command again but instead of '2s' was "1.5s"
is this possible?

The 2 means go to line 2. While on line 2 [s]ubstitute the first occurance of the string "home" with "george".
Try it.

The "1.5" version is a syntax error in my "sed".
Try it.

That sounds something more like what you'd find in printf than sed. I don't think it makes sense here.
