Variable "##*", "% *" meaning

Hi, What means "##*", "% *" in a variable??

I have this in the script that i'm reading:

...
Code:
read line

echo $line
echo ${line#* }
echo ${line##* }
echo ${line% * }

...

The first print:
Code:
DN: RCROOT ONRM_ROOT_MO SNW ONRM_ROOT_MO BSC BSCCC2 BTS ALTOHATILLONOR

The second print:
Code:
RCROOT ONRM_ROOT_MO SNW ONRM_ROOT_MO BSC BSCCC2 BTS ALTOHATILLONOR

the third:
Code:
ALTOHATILLONOR

the fourth:
Code:
DN: RCROOT ONRM_ROOT_MO SNW ONRM_ROOT_MO BSC BSCCC2 BTS

Thx

See String Operations in the Advanced BASH Scripting Guide.

BASH and KSH share most of these operations.

Code:
echo $line
# ${VAR#EXPR} strips the shortest possible string that matches EXPR
# from the front. So it chops off the first bit and stops at the first space.
echo ${line#* }
# Like #, but strips the LONGEST match. So it stops at the last space.
echo ${line##* }
# Like #, but strips the shortest match from the back of the string.
# It stops at the second-last space.
echo ${line% * }
