parent directories

can anyone explain parent directories in detail.
for example /home/unix/jones i'm not understanding what exactly the parent directory is.

/home/unix/jones

unix is the parent directory of jones
home is the parent directory of unix
the root directory is the parent directory of home

can root as in ../home/unix/jones, root is the parent of all them or is it just the one in front, like a train? thanks for the reply

maybe visualizing the structure of the directories may clarify the concept:

+-- home              <-- this is child to '/' and parent to '/home/unix'

/ (root) is also the parent directory of itself.
