NR function
Hi guys,

Can anyone explain to me in a simple way, what is the function or meaning of NR in shell commands? say for example:

a1=cat file | grep word | awk 'NR>0 {print $1}'
echo "number of users = $a1"

NR is an awk variable, not shell. It means "Number Records", ie. "number of line" or better "number of current line".
The line as posted will not work and has redundancy. NR does not make sense in it in my eyes. If you want an alternative you can try this:

a1=`awk '/word/ {print $1}' file`
