You can get the latest zip source code and compile it yourself.

On sunfreeware.com there are several packages with the string "zip"

Code:
bzip2-1.0.6
clzip-1.0
gzip-1.4
lbzip2-0.23
lzip-1.11
p7zip-9.20.1
pbzip2-1.1.1
pdlzip-1.1
plzip-0.6
unzip-6.0
zip-3.0

Which one can password protect a ZIP compatible with MS Windows XP (no additional software).

zip-3.0. You can even compile it with the read password from stdin on so you can script it.

I downloaded and installed

Code:
ftp://ftp.sunfreeware.com/pub/freeware/sparc/10/zip-3.0-sol10-sparc-local.gz

thanks

Code:
$ /usr/local/bin/zip -P 33cbbda6b4b4a1da7dd95a07df13b423 txt.zip txt
adding: txt (deflated 32%)
