script to grep content - error

Hi,

I have written a script to search content of the files in the sub-directories.

Questions:
1) When i execute the script I get an error, pls can someone help me with this.
2) What is the command to search for a content in the files in the sub directories ?

I am assuming it is
Code:
find ./ -type f | xargs grep "search string"

However I get some errors if i am in certain directories

given bellow is the script:
Code:
#Filenames
searchString=$1

#Build Command
command="find ./ -type f | xargs grep ${searchString}"
echo ${command}

#Execute command
$command

Error:
Code:
find: |: unknown option

Thanks,
muthu

Code:
$ a="find /your/home/path -type f -print | xargs grep \"pattern\""
$ echo $a
find /your/home/path -type f -print | xargs grep "pattern"
$ eval $a
/your/home/path/filename:pattern

Note - I am using a mac (not sure if different variants of POSIX have slightly different commands)

When I execute my script in certain directories it works ok, but in certain other directories, I get the following error:

Code:
xargs: unterminated quote

command executed:
Code:
find ./ -type f -print | xargs grep "a1"

Are you sure you are not going through binaries in those cases? ( your find doesn't exclude them...)

yeah you are correct, I had some binaries in those directories.

Question1:
The way to exclude is only based on file extensions ?
Unfortunately i have some binaries which don't have extensions.

I used the following command and it seems to be working fine.
I suppose it does search the binaries as well but I don't have big binaries in those directories:

Code:
grep -ir --exclude=*.{png,jpg,o} "a1" *

Question2:
What is the difference between the following 2 commands
Code:
grep -r "a1" *

Code:
grep -r "a1"

One reads from *, i.e., every file in the current directory.

The other reads from standard input.

Oh ok, I kept trying without * and was waiting ... lol

Thank a lot guys, I think i understand a little better now Smilie
