Does anyone know how to get the IP Address of the connecting client to apear in the MOTD I am new to linux and I was wondering if this was possible thanks in advance.

Thanks for you help I am actually looking for some help on writing a script to get the ip address in the MOTD sorry if I was not specific.

Try putting the script in /etc/login or /etc/profile. Or whatever the global login file is on your sytem. I'm not sure that's something you can do in /etc/motd.

Putting the script within the global shell initialisation files would probably be the easiest way to go about it as gliss suggests.

You can use escape sequences to display certain information within /etc/issue, but not /etc/motd using most versions of getty - Linux uses (usually) agetty (sometimes mingetty - check /etc/inittab). Check the manual page for your particular getty program to get the escapes. You can have nodename (hostname) and domain name information, but not IP addresses as far as I can recall.
