Yes, you can fsck whatever filesystem you want. See man fsck.

To unmount a filesystem, umount /path/to/mountpoint. if the filesystem is in use, then it won't let you.

You may have to boot the machine from a restore CD or somesuch, and fsck it there, if you can't stop things from using the partition while the system is live.

If /tmp is the only filesystem having problems, that doesn't sound too dangerous. Nothing important ought to be kept in /tmp/.

So the correct command is:

fsck /tmp ?

Depends on your system (fsck is not the same everywhere!) but probably. Have you checked its manpage? Type man fsck then hit enter

And, of course, you have to umount it before you do this, using the command I described in my last post.
