Splitting a variable at a specific characher

Hey, I'm somewhat new to writing scripts and I keep coming across a problem when I try to split a filename that contains a dash '-'.

For example:

SomeFoo - FooBar.foo

I want to split to SomeFoo and FooBar.foo

I tried using basename and cut but didn't have any luck.

Any suggestions/help?

if you dont have any schema of your files name ( how many dashes they have ) , you can use this :

Code:
$ echo "SomeFoo - FooBar.foo" |tr -d "-"
SomeFoo  FooBar.foo

or if you know how many dashes you may have :

Code:
$ echo "SomeFoo - FooBar.foo" |awk '{print $1,$3,$4}'
SomeFoo FooBar.foo

Code:
$ echo "SomeFoo - FooBar.foo" |nawk '{sub(/-/, "")};1'
SomeFoo  FooBar.foo
$
$ echo "SomeFoo - FooBar.foo" | sed 's,-,,1'
SomeFoo  FooBar.foo
$
