Data files with .gz

Hi Friends,

May I know how to deal with files that have the extention of .gz?

Hi there!

Well, file with extension *.gz usually means that the file was compressed with gzip utility. Most Windows compression utilities (such as winzip) can uncompress these kind of files. In Unix, to uncompress this type of file you must use gunzip <filename.gz>. If the file is in format *.tar.gz, you can use tar command to deal with this file. Use the "z" flag when using tar command. To compress a file to this format use gzip <files>.

Any questions tell me

Hi HTT,

What is the similar utility for tar on Sun OS? I am trying to uncompress a .gz file but man page did not reply with any gunzip help.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi,

The .gz is as said by htsubamoto is a extentsion for a zipped file. You can use winzip to uncompress them. But winzip wont pick up symbolic links and a few other things (I forget what else). To use gzip first of all you need to get gzip. On some of the systems I've worked on after getting gzip I've had to 'chmod +x gzip' then move it to /usr/sbin and then gzip will work.

The command for decompressing gzip files is:

gzip -d filename (-d is decompress)

Hope that helps you.

Yes, that was what I did when I tried man gunzip and the reply from man page was "no manual entry for gunzip". I have search Freeware from Solaris but sofar only found gzip 1.2.4 for Solaris 8, I am running Solaris 2.6.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
