I thought default shell in SOLARIS 10 was ksh...

I'm using csh apparently...i know I can access ksh with that method you mentioned.

As explained before, you have to add them to your ~/.profile file.

A quick and easy way to append things to your ~/.profile is:

% cp ~/.profile ~/.profile-bak
% cat >>~/.profile
alias a "programa"
alias b "programb"
^D
%

...where, for ^D, you literally need to type control-D. The ^ has nothing to do with shift-6. This will tell cat to stop reading from keyboard and finish writing to ~/.profile.

If you make a typo too late to backspace and fix, cp ~/.profile-bak ~/.profile to put things back the way they were.

You can also edit it with vi ~/.profile though vi, being designed 35 years ago for a totally alien keyboard, is a bit hard to master. Here's a vi cheat sheet if you're curious.

I typed it and what I got back was

cp: cannot access /staff/scb/.profile

I assume that's my company restricting access. Is there another way to do it, or is that the only way?

The mount point and directory is not what you usually see on solaris (/export/home...). Can you just type:

pwd

If you are in your home directory type also:

ls -al | more

The environment files are at the beginning... with more it will display per screen, you will have to press Enter to continue or q to quit...

Then you don't have a .profile yet. Ignore it and do the rest.
