So you connect yourself to a solaris box... then what do you do?
For a shell will not accept like that mappings and if you do so, you wont be able to use those keys anymore e.g. to type text or commands... So my question is more "your need come from an application, if so which? Or are you talking of command line in your current shell which means we could, not map keys ( I tell you - bad idea...) but create word aliases: You type <word> it will display what you want... For that we need to know the shell you are using:

echo $SHELL gave me: /bin/csh

Also, when I typed 'uname -a' I got: SunOS pinotgris 5.10 Generic_138888-03 sun4v sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5220 (incase that helps...)

It's command line stuff, not an application.

It will be helpful if you can set aliases in your .profile file.

How would I set an alias and what would it do?

you can open you .profile file which is in your home directory and insert one alias stating
e.g.
alias pq="<value>" and execute it.

next time when you will use it , it will give you the value.

Typed it in and nothing happened

That is because the syntax given applies to ksh... you are using csh... And I know nothing (completely forgot...) on csh..
Try to launch a korn shell by typing just
