crontab

hi,

i have to backup a database everyday on a Sun Microsystem.

i have been looking around and have found that crontab might be the answer.

the list of steps that have to be followed for me to get the database is:

1. on cmd telnet the equipment.
2. put the user name and password.
3. i normally log in as oracle.
4. so then oracle>cd /opt/hlr/trans/exp
5. ./expDB (which gives me the menu)
6. then i insert values like 3 ( which tells me to do the subscriber backup)
7. then i press yes
8. now i need to save the file by a specific file name and i need to increment by 1 for each new backup that i make.

my list of questions is:

1. how do i check which editor is available on the system?
2. will 01 3 * * * ./expDB work as a command on contrab?
3. where i have to select 3, will 02 3 * * * 3 work?
4. how do i work around for the renaming of the file?

awaiting your precious input,

many thanks,

If You could look into expDB script and find out what's going on if You choose "3", You could cut it out of that script, delete the "yes" question and add script in that form to cron on Oracle machine. Incrementation of the filename could be done with simple `date` adding. You didn't tell if name of backup file is given as argument, or is it another question from the original script?

ok for incrementation of the filename: `date +%d%m%y'??

Can You paste somewhere expDB script? Unless it's not a script but some kind of binary...
To check what kind of file is it try after logging:
Code:
file /opt/hlr/trans/exp/expDB

If it's some kind of script try to see what's inside, You can try some of editors:
pico, nano, mcview, vi, vim... followed by scriptname, eg:
Code:
pico /opt/hlr/trans/exp/expDB

file /opt/hlr/trans/exp/expDBnot a valid file or directory.

oracle>cd /opt/hlr/trans/exp
oracle> cd expDB

expDB is not a directory

pico not available, vi /opt/hlr/trans/exp/expDB = cannot see the script
