This is probably a case of semantics getting in the way, so I'll clarify what I meant.

Obviously ed would have to read the file into memory and then write out the new data, but all of this is done without creating a new file. The file is modified, so it may be considered new in the sense that the content has changed, but it is not new according to the file system layer (the inode has not changed, only timestamps).

If the file system were out of inodes, no new files could be created and sed -i and similar approaches would fail; ed would work (assuming, of course, sufficient memory).

Counts not matching in file
