Just installed Solaris 8 but....

Hello again,

Well i went ahead with my solaris installation tonight (on my pc) and it all appeared to work ok.

Unfortunately, i am unable to use the system yet because it gives me this horrible message straight after it boots up:

"The X-server can not be started on display :0..."

It then asks for

timresh console login: (timresh is my hostname), followed by
Password:

I have not specified any login details during the installation and the only password i have created is my root password.

I'm a little bit stuck Smilie

Any help for this complete novice would really come in handy..

thanks for reading,

Timresh.

When you installed the OS, did you select, "FULL Install Plus OEM?"
Or did you select the minimum client only install?

By the way, you can login using the root...

timresh console login: root
Password: <passwd>

By the way, you'll always get the "The X-server can not be started on display :0..." error if you are on a ascii term. You need to have a VGA monitor using the HD-15 connector.

Well, the OP says he/she is using a "PC", so I'd assume they're using Intel x86 hardware with a standard SVGA monitor already attached (timresh, please could you clarify this - what hardware architecture are you using, i.e. is it SPARC or Intel?).

Try launching kdmconfig (from the command line after logging in) and going through that again as root.

If that still isn't working, you may consider installing XFree86 (good luck! Smilie) so, try taking a look at this first
