Question Quiet System for Maintenance

I have backups that run in a cron @ midnight. Does the backup utility make sure [somehow] that the system is quiet --(no users are logged on) or do I need to add some stuff to make sure nobody is accessing those file while they are being backed up.

Which backup utility? If you are using one of the standard Unix tools such as tar, cpio, dump, etc. then no checking will be done. If you are running a database there should be a tool available that will take hot-backups or ensure that the data is backed up properly.

Big question

This is a question with many answers.

In general any type of offline database backup must (of course) be done without running transactions. To achieve that you will have to 'kill' the user processes (nicely) before database shutdown.

On the other hand online database backups are designed to allow transactions during backup.

File system type of backups can usually be run without any particular measures.

I suggest to consult the documentation regarding backups of any application you might be running on your server.

MySQL Good idea to stop database

I'm running the backup command. I can stop the database service/daemon before the backup starts and just restart it. I didn't think of that... thanks
