egrep from a specific column?
Is it possible to use egrep on a specific column in a file?

ie. my current code:

egrep 'snp|ins' file1 > file2

I'd like to only include the rows if they have snp or ins as terms in a SPECIFIC column.

Well, egrep is string oriented, so maybe use awk, which is field oriented, or shell "while read c1 c2 c3 c4 c5 c6 ...."
