nohup

Hi,

We are trying to run a shell script using nohup command. But this scripts asks for user input (username and password). Once we enter credentials it should continue run in background.

Can someone please suggest how can we implement this? we can't modify .sh file since they are provided by 3rd party and have server config details.

Thanks

Read up on "here document". Make a wrapper shell script that calls the vendor's script, passing the expected credentials and nohup that:
Code:
vendors_script.sh << EOF
your_id
your_password
EOF

The "here document" feeds the strings between the "EOF"s to the vendor's script when it is waiting for a response from STDIN. You can use any string instead of EOF.

There is a possible security issue here though with having passwords hardcoded in a file. But this should get you started.

Thanks for your reply Gary.

I am sorry, but m little new to unix, could you please explain more.

Thanks n Regards

Please post startApp.sh (blotting anything confidential with X's) making it totally clear which script lines or program commands are asking for username and password.

Please also post what Operating System and version you are running and what Shell you prefer.

I just learned from another thread (https://www.unix.com/shell-programmin...#post302542368) that you can call a crontab entry like this to supply input to a program:
Code:
minute hour day_of_month month day_of_week your_script.sh%1%yes%n%64

However I think this is a security risk to have the password in there.

After you start the script and enter the input manually you can suspend the script using ctrl+z or ctrl+y and use the bg command to continue it in background.
