[help] Cant compress file
Anybody know what happened here?

162 lab2-36:~/try_direct/another> compress url.txt
url.txt: -- file unchanged

Why this file remained unchanged?

what is size of the file ?
Compression happens if the file is significantly large and compression should save some space.

Try on a large file ....

or try some thing like this :
compress -v url.txt to run in verbose mode.

or forcibly do compression eventhough % of compression is less.

compress -f url.txt

OK, thanx. It does work on large files. I'm just wondering why it doesn't work on this file. Sure it's a small file - only 65 bytes.

compress will not compress a file if the compressed file is not smaller than the source file.

Seems like the block size of the file system would be the smallest unit it could (or should) consider.
