UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi,

I know gzcat helps grep for a string inside a file that has been zipped using gzip command.

However, how can the same be achieved for files zipped using zip command and any other compression commands you may know off.

For zip there is zcat or zgrep, for bzip2 there is bzcat and bzgrep. I do not know of a universal reading tool for all of them, sorry.

zip debug.log

ls -ltr debug.log.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 wlsuser wlsgrp 3332 Jul 20 08:51 debug.log.zip

Issue:
zcat debug.log.zip | grep "SetPriorityByPerformance"
debug.log.zip.Z: No such file or directory
zgrep debug.log.zip | grep "SetPriorityByPerformance"
bash: zgrep: command not found

uname -a
SunOS myserver Generic_144488-07 sun4v sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5220

Try zcat < filename

zcat < debug.log.zip | grep "SetPriorityByPerformance"
stdin: not in compressed format

No Luck..

Then you're not making the right kind of files for zcat. If you're making actual name-brand zip files, then nothing but funzip can extract those to a pipe...

Do you have gzip? Try making the files with gzip filename which should turn it into filename.gz
