if i have the option (text/gui) i think that working in a test interface would probably teach me more so i would prefer that, but whatever way you can help me with is appreciated.

thanks.

A good non-gui text editor is vi. If you dont want to deal with the steep learning curve, look for pico instead.

do you happen to know if vi is included in mandrake 8.0???

i would like to use something that will force me to learn the commands so i really undertand what each one is and how it is implemented...

but i would also like to be able to connect to the internet from linux (as of know i have to keep logging out of linux and onto windows to get online (which kinda sucks)...

thanks.

I have mandrake 7.2 and it comes with that. In fact, it should come with any distro of Linux.

To enter vi, type the following at the command prompt:

vi filename

I think most distros are shipping vim (vi IMproved). so you could use "vim myfile" too. However, be warned, the learning curve on vi/vim is kinda steep. It take some getting used to. You might be better off with, as mentioned before, pico. kwrite, or nedit are also good editing programs that are a bit more gui based. Good luck.

ok so once i choose a text editor in order to get my modem configued correctly as per the instructions at this link (for Expressnet, Maryland):

http://www.oswg.org/oswg-nightly/os...dem/hybrid.html

would i then just type in those shaded areas exactly as it is written in to the text editor or is it more complex than that???
